The Forty-Deuce: The Times Square Photographs of Bill Butterworth, 1983-1984
Times Square is now the family-friendly New York City tourist landmark ne plus ultra – but less than 20 years ago it was an altogether different cultural destination. Bill Butterworth thrived amidst the strippers, hustlers, perverts, and strange characters otherwise, capturing the last untamed moments of the old New York City.
Collected into a book by Hilton Ariel Ruiz and Beatriz Ruiz, The Forty-Deuce: The Times Square Photographs of Bill Butterworth, 1983-1984 reveals the action, lust, and grimy authenticity now forgotten in the bathing glow of numberless LEDs.
powerHouse Books will host an exhibition opening and launch party today, Tuesday, June 12 (RSVP required), and the book is also available for purchase online.
