Reading all these Generation Screwed articles has left me bewildered at the amount of whining that my generation is capable of. Yes, I’m also living in a country with an almost 11% unemployment rate. Yes, our banks have had to be bailed out. Yes, we have requested an EU support mechanism. Yes, I am screwed. We’re all screwed. And yes, I have also whined about it incessantly.
But I know people who are volunteering and working their asses off doing stuff they love for peanuts and they couldn’t be happier. I know people who are planning weddings, having babies, struggling to set up businesses, and living life. I know people who are doing well and I know people who really aren’t. Some of these people are from my generation, and some of them are from my parents’ generation, the supposed ‘lucky’ boomers. We’ve all been lumped together in this rapidly sinking boat, but for some reason, it’s my generation that’s complaining the loudest about it.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that we’re ALL screwed. Whether it’s from student debt or from layoffs, it’s pretty much World Screwed right now, rather than Generation Screwed. Unfortunately, it’s also Generation Whine that’s getting us all this attention. The world has sucked before, and the world has gotten better before. All we can do is adapt, do our best, and for the love of god, shut up!
