I’ve been in plenty of hairy situations, but this was probably the scariest thing I have experienced on the force.

The NYPD’s 60th Precinct, who bravely helped each other escape their flooding police station, are some of our heros of Hurricane Sandy. 

We have our moments now and then.

The firefighters of Swift Water Team 6, who used a boat to rescue 16 men, women, and children trapped on a flaming roof and surrounded by rising waters, are some of our heroes of Hurricane Sandy. 

We just did what we always do—what nurses do—we took care of the babies. We kept them safe.

This week’s cover, for our Heroes Issue, features soldiers from the Black Hawk crew of Dust Off 73. who, according to the ArmyTimes back in April 2012, “spent nearly 12 hours in the air, extracting 14 wounded and one soldier killed in action and flying three critical resupply missions during a three-day operation.”
