RIP Dr. Maya Angelou. The internationally acclaimed poet died May 28 in her Winston-Salem, N.C. home, aged 86. Above, she reads ‘And Still I Rise,’ from the eponymous 1978 collection

Angelou’s first autobiographical memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969) brought her critical acclaim; among other achievements she read her work, ‘On the Pulse of Morning,’ at the swearing in of President Bill Clinton. She received the Presidential Medal of Honor in Freedom in 2011.

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.

I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size

But when I start to tell them,

They think I’m telling lies.

I say,

It’s in the reach of my arms,

The span of my hips,

The stride of my step,

The curl of my lips.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

I walk into a room

Just as cool as you please,

And to a man,

The fellows stand or

Fall down on their knees.

Then they swarm around me,

A hive of honey bees.

I say,

It’s the fire in my eyes,

And the flash of my teeth,

The swing in my waist,

And the joy in my feet.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered

What they see in me.

They try so much

But they can’t touch

My inner mystery.

When I try to show them,

They say they still can’t see.

I say,

It’s in the arch of my back,

The sun of my smile,

The ride of my breasts,

The grace of my style.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Now you understand

Just why my head’s not bowed.

I don’t shout or jump about

Or have to talk real loud.

When you see me passing,

It ought to make you proud.

I say,

It’s in the click of my heels,

The bend of my hair,

the palm of my hand,

The need for my care.

’Cause I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

The clues to finding Forrest Fenn’s hidden treasure are allegedly hidden in this poem. If you have any ideas, we’re looking for help cracking the code. Seriously. Not a joke. Send us a message. And good luck!

The backstory.

As I have gone alone in there
And with my treasures bold,
I can keep my secret where,
And hint of riches new and old.

Begin it where warm waters halt
And take it in the canyon down,
Not far, but too far to walk.
Put in below the home of Brown.

From there it’s no place for the meek,
The end is ever drawing nigh;
There’ll be no paddle up your creek,
Just heavy loads and water high.

If you’ve been wise and found the blaze,
Look quickly down, your quest to cease,
But tarry scant with marvel gaze,
Just take the chest and go in peace.

So why is it that I must go
And leave my trove for all to seek?
The answers I already know,
I’ve done it tired, and now I’m weak

So hear me all and listen good,
Your effort will be worth the cold.
If you are brave and in the wood
I give you title to the gold.

If you have any questions about the man who hid his treasure, hop over to this story and talk to the writer in the comments

Poet Caroline Rothstein performs ‘Fat’, a powerful slam on her years dealing with an eating disorder.

Lady Gaga tweeted this earlier tonight (“A poem by a very inspiring woman. Called ‘FAT’ Welcome to the revolution.”), after Rothstein posted the video saying she is “SO grateful for Lady Gaga for her bravery and championship in spearheading this crucial conversation!”

It’s pretty awesome. You should watch it.

Sarah Palin writes funny emails!
That’s what we learned upon reading the latest batch of released emails sent during her super fun final months in office. But Michael Solomon didn’t just see emails, no no, far from it, he saw poetry.

Enquiring Minds

Stupidly ridiculous.
Like
They just ran a story last week
Saying
“See, we were right!
Bristol does drugs
Via Sherry Johnston”
Or some stupid thing
That the kids saw
On the cover
While shopping
At WalMart.

There are more.
