I am thrilled to report that Jace Lacob has been promoted to West Coast Deputy Bureau Chief. Jace, as you all know, is our highly astute and deeply knowledgeable TV columnist, covering television and culture, including food and cocktails, books, film, and even the real-life sport of Quidditch! In his new role, Jace will work with Gabe Doppelt in directing our entertainment and culture coverage.
It is with sadness that we also say goodbye to Kate Aurthur, who is leaving us to join BuzzFeed. Kate co-created Sexy Beast with Gabe and we will miss her greatly. She has been an essential spark in our powerhouse Sexy team.

I’m thrilled to announce that Michael Moynihan is joining The Daily Beast as Cultural News Editor, focusing on the intersection of culture and politics, social issues and business and other key issues, and helping drive the Beast’s coverage of the hot stories of the day. He’ll also review books for the site and write for Newsweek. Michael, best known most recently for exposing the fabrications of New Yorker writer Jonah Lehrer, has been a columnist for Tablet magazine, a contributing editor to Reason magazine, and a regular book reviewer for the Wall Street Journal. He was formerly the managing editor of Vice magazine and a resident fellow at the Swedish policy institute Timbro. His writing has appeared in the Wilson Quarterly, Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, Politico, Los Angeles Times, Utne Reader, Commentary, and numerous other publications.
Michael joins us on Oct. 3. Please join me in welcoming him to The Daily Beast and Newsweek.

I am very excited to share with you the appointment of Baba Shetty as CEO of The Newsweek Daily Beast Company. Baba is joining us from his position as Chief Strategy and Chief Media Officer at the firm Hill Holliday where he leads brand planning, consumer research, content and media planning.
Baba is a real catalyst in bringing ideas to the marketplace. We collaborated on our very successful Mad Men issue together and forged a terrific creative relationship in the process. He is extremely gifted at brand and digital strategy, and is the perfect partner for the next phase of The Newsweek Daily Beast Company and our expanding live events business.
Under his leadership, Hill Holliday was named 2011 Media Agency of the Year by Media magazine and for four consecutive years has won Adweek’s Media Plan of the Year Award – the only agency to do so. Prior to Hill Holliday, Baba led digital at Fallon Worldwide, and spent three years as a principal analyst at Forrester Research in Cambridge, MA.
Baba assumes the role of CEO from Stephen Colvin. As you all know well, Steve has been a key force in building The Daily Beast from a start-up when he joined in 2009 to the hit it is today. Steve will depart in October. We have had a great 3 years together and all of us appreciate how hard he has worked. He leaves the company in a great place and poised for a very exciting future. Our Webby-award winning Daily Beast just celebrated a year-on-year increase in traffic of 69% to 15 million uniques a month, an ad-volume jump of 40% since the same time last year and we’ve seen an increase in Newsweek tablet subscriptions of 233% since January!

I am so thrilled and proud to announce that we are continuing to break our own records with Beast traffic – the typically slow news month of August has been a roaring success for us – we’ll close out at over 15 million uniques / 118 million page views.
The most exciting thing here is that the traffic growth came from multiple areas, not one hit alone but from politics, from Sexy, from Newsweek content, from video, and via social channels – proving we are truly gunning on all fronts. In addition, big bravos to Kathy and her team for the terrific RNC video coverage which was smart, wild and gloriously wacky!
And on the business side, congratulations to Rob and our sales team who have increased Newsweek’s August ad pages by 22% YOY.
